About Oak Harbor
Youth Sailing
The Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Mission
Statement
To encourage participation in the sport of sailing as a community-based
recreation program, and to provide quality instruction in sailing and safety
skills while fostering the values of team-building, sportsmanship, and
fairness in this ecologically sound sport.
Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Instructors
There is at least one CPR trained instructor at each session. Additionally,
several of our instructors are certified by the official US Sailing
organization and we use the US Sailing recommended course book for our
classroom sessions. All instructors have extensive sailing experience in all types
of conditions in and around the Puget Sound.
The program uses Optis,
El Toros and Lidos.
The Opti and 8’ El Toro
is an ideal boat for a beginner as it has only one sail and is designed to be
sailed single-handed. In the El Toro, the
beginner has the opportunity to learn both sail trim and steering.
The 14’ Lido class is a logical next step
for the intermediate or adult sailor as it is designed for 2 or 3 people and
has both a mainsail and headsail. This class of boat is very popular for
racing in the Puget Sound.
Non-Profit Status
Oak Harbor Youth Sailing is a 501(c)3
non-profit organization.
Donations are tax deductible. 100% of donations and program fees go back into
the program. Instructors are unpaid volunteers who simply believe in
promoting a love of sailing for all ages.
What one parent had to say:
“Dear Mr.
Cooley and the entire Youth Sailing program,
Thanks are not quite
expressive enough for the absolute ‘best’ week my son, Dylan, has had this
summer. He thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the program and looked forward
to each and every day spent learning about the boats and sailing them.
Not only was the
program well organized and well thought out, but you all made the experience
fun and exciting for the kids. Thank you!!
Thank you to all the
volunteers that worked behind the scenes to give my son a truly memorable
experience and hopefully one that he will enjoy in his years to come. Thank
you to the Oak Harbor Yacht Club for the use of the
facility and the financial support you give to the sailing program.
I am now one of the
‘faithful’ and will definitely put the Youth Sailing program on our summer
activity schedule for the years to come. Count us in to be a positive voice
in the community to raise awareness of the program and the many wonderful
things you are doing with the youth of Oak Harbor.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”
